Every student is unique. That’s why we’ve created Flex—a learning experience that adapts to your family’s schedule and your child’s learning style. For students who qualify and whose parents or guardians would like more flexibility, Flex provides the right balance of autonomy and support to help students thrive.

Families in the Flex program set their own structures and schedules for learning. Flex students have enhanced learning models, access to anytime learning, and support from certified teachers.

How Our Flex Program Works
All students begin in our regular program. After completing one quarter at IDVA, students who meet the requirements and whose families would like more flexibility may apply for the Flex Program.
In the Flex Program, students and their Learning Coaches create a daily learning plan that fits their schedule. Live virtual classes are optional and offered at flexible times during the day and week. Students are also assigned teachers who provide support and learning resources. To stay in the Flex Program, students must keep passing grades in all courses.

How does a student qualify for the Flex Program?
Flex Program Eligibility
Kindergarten–5th Grade:
Students may apply if they:
- Have been enrolled at IDVA for at least one quarter
- Are meeting academic and attendance expectations
- Have shown proficiency on the Idaho Reading Indicator (IRI), if applicable
- Have shown proficiency on the Idaho ISAT math and ELA tests, or on the IXL math and ELA diagnostic assessments
Middle and High School:
Students may apply if they:
- Have been enrolled at IDVA for at least one quarter
- Have a current grade of “B” or higher in all courses
- Are meeting academic and attendance expectations
- Have shown proficiency on the Idaho ISAT math and ELA tests, or on the IXL math and ELA diagnostic assessments
How does the Flex program differ from the standard program?
Both Flex and standard programs are open to students in all grades. The main difference is in the amount of teacher-directed learning. In the standard program, teachers provide group instruction through online synchronous classes, which students are expected to attend. While both programs require daily attendance, the standard program is best for students who need live instruction from their teachers and those who value time with their peers.
Is the curriculum the same for the Flex and standard programs?
Yes, students complete the same curriculum in both programs. Like all students, Flex students access the OLS for their courses and sample schedules that they can adapt when structuring their month of learning.
How often do Flex students receive support?
The amount of support students receive depends on their needs. Teachers are available via email and phone on school days and have regularly scheduled and posted office hours each week. These are set times when teachers are in a virtual classroom session, ready to answer questions from students and Learning Coaches. Students with IEPs receive all the services called for in their plans, including specifically designed instruction time with special education teachers.
